January 9th, 2008
Dear Milan Veteran,
As you may be aware, the Town Board of Milan has adopted a change in the veteran’s exemption amounts to equal those of Dutchess County. These increases represent Milan’s continued commitment to our veterans. The new law increases the maximum exempt values and will be reflected on the January 2008 tax bill.
10% or $27,000 for Wartime
15% or $45,000 for Combat
Disabled up to $90,000
In addition to the new limits above, the Board also enacted a new “Cold War” veterans exemption law. The exemption is available to veterans who served on active duty (exclusive of training) for at least one year in the United States armed forces between September 2, 1945 and December 26, 1991, and who are not currently receiving either the eligible funds or alternative veterans' exemption. Qualified individuals are able to apply for a 15% or $12,000 maximum exemption for 10 years. The “Cold War” exemption will apply to the 2008 tax roll and beyond.
Veterans who are currently receiving an exemption do not need to reapply. The deadline for new applications is March 1st, 2008. If you know of someone who may benefit from these new laws, please let them know that my office is available to assist them. Have a happy and healthy new year!
Sincerely,
Scott Hobson
Chairman
